Visually and audibly, it was a masterpiece. Owlboy was an incredible experience in every sense. Owlboy may have a few annoying navigational hangups, but none are enough to counter the overwhelming magic of the adventure at hand. I can't even say that I wish there was more of it because what is here is just so damn satisfying from start to finish, and I wouldn't want to ruin that. Having said that, the game does feature a level-to-level system that means you will explore until you come across an interaction that points you to the next area.An exciting adventure with tons of heart. To balance this, the freedom found in flying is mostly in exploration as in combat you are often in situations whereby you are unable to take flight and avoid fights, which is important as it would otherwise render the combat aspect of the game irrelevant. This grants the player more freedom in movement whilst also allowing for bigger, more sprawling levels for the player to explore. The refreshing gameplay aspect you are introduced to in Owlboy is that, as an Owl, you are able to fly. Most recently, the game reminds me of Ori and the Blind Forest which, incidentally, is a masterful game and Owlboy fits right in there amongst these titles. When you hear people drawing comparisons with Owlboy you can often hear a multitude of different classics offered up. This title screen alone gives you a glimpse at what you can expect in Owlboy beautifully designed environments with a fitting soundtrack. First impressions might not be everything, but Owlboy certainly delivers a good one right away. As you progress there is one theme that emanates loud and clear and Otus himself exudes when you fail in life, you must not let it knock you down.Īt the start of Owlboy you are greeted by a beautifully designed title screen with a charming soundtrack to match it. However, this makes Otus a very relatable character.
Instead, Otus is, quite bluntly, a failing student. The story of Owlboy is firmly set in its own world. Much like the bonds forged in the development of this game, it will be imperative for Otus to forge bonds with his friends in order to fulfil his duties. You soon find that Otus is not quite up to the task in the same way as his predecessors. You play as Otus, a mute Owl who has to follow in the footsteps of the mighty owls. For the developers, the game making its way to console might have seemed a distant dream.Īfter all, it first came about in when the team behind Owlboy, D-pad Studio, initially created the concept for what would become Owlboy. This is a homage to games of the SNES and Genesis era, but it employs greater technological bouts than those consoles were ever capable of.
